THE THINGS THEY DON’T TEACH IN LECTURES

Your student money handbook.

01 / START HERE

Your first-week money checklist

  1. Plan the whole term. Work out when funding arrives and how many weeks it must cover. Reserve rent and bills first.
  2. Compare student bank accounts. Check the approved overdraft, deposit requirements and graduate terms before weighing up perks.
  3. Verify your student discounts. Register with a discount provider and compare the final price before buying.
  4. Check university freebies. Ask about software, library books, equipment loans and careers support.
  5. Audit recurring payments. Note trial renewal dates and cancel subscriptions you do not use.
  6. Save your support contacts. Your university money adviser can help you find grants and hardship support.
02 / FUNDING & SUPPORT

Know where to ask for help

Start with the student finance body for your home nation and your university’s student money team. Where you live, where you study, your course and previous study can affect support.

Living-cost figures by home nation and circumstances, with the page each figure came from, are in the funding guidance pack.

Ask your university about bursaries, scholarships and hardship funds. Confirm eligibility and deadlines directly; support is not guaranteed. If you are struggling to cover essentials, speak to the money team before borrowing more.

03 / EVERYDAY SAVINGS

Get your shared-house budget sorted

  1. List what the rent includes before signing up for anything else.
  2. Agree in writing how you will split energy, water, broadband and household purchases.
  3. Record meter readings and the date you become responsible for the property.
  4. Compare the full contract cost, including setup fees and any minimum term.
  5. Set a monthly reminder to check spending and settle shared costs.

Check council tax treatment directly with your local council; household status matters. Keep an emergency buffer rather than treating an overdraft as extra income.

ABOUT

A smarter start for student money

Student Sterling brings together student discounts, selected bank accounts and practical earning ideas in one place. It is part of Ray’s Sterling family of sites and is independent of the brands featured.

How we choose content

We prioritise clear eligibility, useful savings and understandable costs. Listings link to provider sources and show when they were reviewed. Featured order is editorial; it is not a complete market comparison or a personal recommendation.

How links work

The offer links in this launch edition are direct, non-affiliate links. Any future paid placement or commission-bearing link should be labelled clearly. We do not sell financial products or take applications.

Corrections

PRIVACY

Your privacy & saved deals

Saved deals are stored in this browser’s local storage, on this device. There is no Student Sterling account and no cross-device syncing. Your budget inputs are calculated in the browser and are not sent by this site to a server.

The deal alerts page is a switched-off preview. It does not collect an email address and it does not send one.

This edition has no added analytics or advertising trackers. Hosting providers may process connection and access information; fonts are bundled locally in this export. External provider sites have their own privacy policies.

You can remove individual saved deals using the heart buttons, or clear them all below. Clearing browser data also removes them.
